La Psiquiatría Legal es una rama de la Psiquiatría que se dedica al estudio de las relaciones existentes entre la práctica clínica de esta especialidad y el marco legal existente en cada país. Dentro de la Psiquiatría Legal existen dos grandes áreas de actuación: por un lado está la Psiquiatría y Ley en la Práctica Clínica que se encarga de analizar las implicaciones legales que tiene la práctica clínica, y por otro lado, tenemos la Psiquiatría Forense o Pericial, que se ocupa de la tarea pericial, esto es, de realizar evaluaciones clínicas con el fin de orientar a los jueces o jurados.
